Look closely at the awkward places

Pick a regular trip that doesn't involve passengers or a large load. Walk it, cycle it or look it over using transport you already know. Try to go around the time you'd commute. A street that felt calm on Sunday may be full of school traffic on a weekday morning.

Take a few photos and measurements while you're there. They're useful when a product page gives you a folded width but you're trying to remember how much room there is beside the front door.

Check whether the route is legal

Check which device types are allowed on each part of the trip. E-bike rules don't automatically cover scooters, Onewheels, EUCs or electric skateboards. The road, waterfront path and park shortcut may each have a different authority setting the rules.

The local riding guides link to official rules for the cities we cover. Elsewhere, start with the local transport department and whoever manages the trail or park. Give them the device model and name the path you want to use. That gets you a more useful answer than asking whether bicycles are allowed.

Give the longer route a chance

Suppose the direct route is four miles with an uncomfortable crossing, and the quieter alternative is five. At a hypothetical average of 12 mph while moving, the extra mile adds five minutes each way. Signals, traffic and walking sections will change the actual time.

That ten-minute daily difference may be worth it if the route is much easier to ride. It also adds two miles to the daily range requirement. Put the longer distance into the finder instead of buying for the straight line on the map.

Keep both distances in your notes. The fuel saving comes from the car miles you stop driving; the battery and tire wear follow the miles you ride. The calculator lets you enter a different riding distance when a quieter route adds a detour.

Do one full run with your normal bag

Once you have access to a suitable ride, make the full trip on a day without a work deadline. Bring the bag, lock and clothing you will use. Include the lift to the apartment and the walk through the office. Count parking and changing time as well as time on the road.

Include the stops you normally make. If the grocery store is on the way home, try its parking spot and check that your usual shopping fits. If lifting the ride takes both hands, decide where the coffee and laptop go. If you need to fold it at the station, practice before a train arrives. A different bag or storage arrangement can make the whole trip easier.

Know where you can stop

While you're out, find a sensible place for someone to collect you and a shop that works on your ride. For air-filled tires, we recommend Armor-Dilloz to help with small tread punctures. Choose the formula for your tire before adding it. If the tire is badly damaged, knowing where you can meet a car saves trying to solve that problem while carrying the ride.

Choose the easiest drive to replace first. It might be the station run or the grocery trip, even if the work commute looked promising on paper. Keep the car available for heavy rain, a late finish or a pickup you can't do on the ride. Build around the trips that work instead of buying a bigger machine to force the awkward ones.
