A scooter can be a simple answer to a few paved miles between home and work. You don’t need to pedal, and a folded stem makes it easier to find space indoors. Choose carefully if you’ll be lifting it onto a bus: some scooters are much heavier than their size suggests.

Why choose one?

A lower starting cost

Commuter scooters often cost less than comparably equipped e-bikes. Allow for a helmet, lock and maintenance, including tire repairs.

Folds out of the way

A folding stem and narrow deck can fit where a bicycle won’t. Measure the folded dimensions and check your transit operator’s rules.

No pedaling

You can ride in work clothes without pedaling. Fenders help with spray, but you’ll still need to dress for the weather.

Straightforward controls

Handlebars make steering approachable. Spend time practicing turns and braking somewhere quiet, and keep both hands on the bars while moving.

A smoother ride

Air-filled tires and suspension can soften rough pavement. Small wheels still need care around potholes, cracks and curb edges.

The tradeoff It is still 38.1 lb, uses tubes, takes 5-6 hours to charge, and the 18-mile claim appears without test conditions. There are no turn signals.

Why consider it The 26.2 lb weight is the draw if you have to lift it often. You still get turn signals, a front disc brake and tubeless tires.

The tradeoff There is no suspension, and the carbon-fiber frame pushes up the cost. NIU does not give full test conditions for its range claim.

Why consider it Hydraulic suspension, 11-inch self-sealing tires, dual disc brakes, and built-in charging for longer paved trips.

The tradeoff At 54.2 lb it is a poor stair carry. The 50-mile headline is Eco-mode testing; Segway lists about 25 miles in Sport+ at maximum speed. The official store also currently flags New York shipping restrictions because the model can exceed 20 mph.
